Talking about Henderson’s parents, his father, Ian and his mother, Veronica Henderson divorced when he was five years old. At the age of thirteen, he made his acting debut in Strangers, a local television production. He then went to Birkenhead Primary School, Northcote Intermediate School, and Westlake Boys High School.
At age 17, the Virgin River star debuted as Stuart Neilson in the New Zealand prime-time soap opera Shortland Street in 1992. He remained in the job until 1995. He then spent three years in Australia, where he acted in a variety of Australian films and television shows, including Echo Point and Home and Away.
Later, Martin Henderson immigrated to the United States in 1997 on a student visa to seek a career in Hollywood films and to enroll in a two-year program at the Neighbourhood Playhouse in New York City. He obtained a night job as a restaurant food runner to help pay his tuition.
The 46-year-old actor then played Hamlet in the off-Broadway play Ophelia Thinks Harder while still in high school. He dropped out midway through the two-year program and relocated to Los Angeles. Later, Heath Ledger assisted him financially during a period of several auditions with no success.
