Later, he moved to the United States in his early twenties and now lives in Los Angeles. This explains why the 46-year-old actor has a dreamy American accent.

Talking about Henderson’s parents, his father, Ian and his mother, Veronica Henderson divorced when he was five years old. At the age of thirteen, he made his acting debut in Strangers, a local television production. He then went to Birkenhead Primary School, Northcote Intermediate School, and Westlake Boys High School.

At age 17, the Virgin River star debuted as Stuart Neilson in the New Zealand prime-time soap opera Shortland Street in 1992. He remained in the job until 1995. He then spent three years in Australia, where he acted in a variety of Australian films and television shows, including Echo Point and Home and Away.

Later, Martin Henderson immigrated to the United States in 1997 on a student visa to seek a career in Hollywood films and to enroll in a two-year program at the Neighbourhood Playhouse in New York City. He obtained a night job as a restaurant food runner to help pay his tuition.

The 46-year-old actor then played Hamlet in the off-Broadway play Ophelia Thinks Harder while still in high school. He dropped out midway through the two-year program and relocated to Los Angeles. Later, Heath Ledger assisted him financially during a period of several auditions with no success.

Similarly, Martin Henderson originally appeared in a Fanta ad, speaking with an Australian accent. Then he starred in Kick in 1999, for which he received an AACTA Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2000. After more than a year of unsuccessful auditions in Los Angeles, he was cast in a supporting part in the John Woo-directed military film Windtalkers in 2001.

Following the film’s box office success, Martin Henderson was cast as Drew in Perfect Opposites, and then as the lead role in the motorcycle picture Torque. Later that year, he appeared with Aishwarya Rai in the British love story Bride and Prejudice music video for Britney Spears‘ song Toxic.

The 46-year-old actor then participated in the award-winning film Little Fish, starring Cate Blanchett, in 2005. He also garnered excellent reviews in London’s West End in a performance of Fool for Love starring Juliette Lewis in 2006.

Likely, Henderson was slated to co-star with Jordana Brewster in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a television series based on the 2005 film. However, the series was not picked up by any network. Later, he starred in the film Flyboys in 2006 and also appeared in the House episode Painless in a commercial for the 2008 Cadillac CTS.

Martin Henderson was cast as a New Zealand doctor in Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes‘ short-lived television series Off the Map in 2010. Later, he starred in the multi-platform Australian drama television series Secrets & Lies, as well as the SundanceTV drama series The Red Road.

Moreover, the Grey’s Anatomy star also co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2015 film Everest, then joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy in June of that year as a prospective love interest for series lead Ellen Pompeo‘s Meredith Grey, making his first appearance in November.

The actor left the show two years later, with his last appearance in October 2017. Later, he told Deadline that his choice to leave was motivated by storytelling, adding, “This [was] my final year so I was expecting Nathan’s storyline to be wrapped up.”
